The recommended daily intake of phosphorus for adults aged 19 and older is 700 mg/day. According to US data, most people consume enough or more than this through food. This figure is a target amount, and there is little reason for a healthy adult to add phosphorus supplements without confirming a deficiency. The upper limit is 4,000 mg/day for ages 19–70 and 3,000 mg/day for ages 71 and older. However, these are not target amounts and are not figures to be applied directly to patients with chronic kidney disease. Then, how does the amount absorbed differ even for the same phosphorus?


Different absorption rates for the same phosphorus

Phosphorus from natural animal-based foods is approximately 40–70% absorbed, while plant-based phosphorus may be absorbed less due to the influence of phytates. Plant-based phosphorus in beans, nuts, and whole grains has a certain proportion bound to phytates. In contrast, additive phosphates are estimated to be around 70% absorbed, meaning they can be absorbed more easily. In other words, it is difficult to explain the food context using total mg alone. Even for the same 100mg, the amount the body accepts varies depending on where it came from.


Additive phosphates in processed foods are in a different category

Organic phosphorus in natural foods and additive phosphates have different intake contexts, even if they contain the same element. Additive phosphates are included for food processing purposes such as preservation, moisture retention, and acidity control. Because of the high absorption rate, people who frequently eat processed foods may experience a different phosphorus load than those who eat only natural foods. This is why it is necessary to develop a habit of summing the phosphates in processed foods and various mineral products. Where, then, do sodium phosphate laxatives fit in?


Sodium phosphate laxatives are separate from nutritional supplementation

Sodium phosphate oral solutions and enemas are used as laxatives. Because using them more frequently than the recommended dose can lead to severe electrolyte imbalances, kidney or heart damage, and in rare cases, death, they must be treated separately from nutritional supplementation. Do not use more than the indicated dose within 24 hours, and those with kidney disease, heart disease, dehydration, or the elderly should specifically consult a medical professional. Decreased urination, edema, severe lethargy, persistent vomiting, confusion, or irregular heartbeat must be evaluated immediately.


Different rules apply for kidney disease

In chronic kidney disease, the excretion of phosphorus and the balance of calcium, parathyroid hormone, and vitamin D are disrupted together. Therefore, general dietary advice for healthy individuals is not applied as is. As a rule, healthy adults should not add phosphorus supplements without confirming a deficiency. You must first check which of the following you are using and the total daily amount: multi-minerals, athletic performance products, prescribed phosphates, or sodium phosphate laxatives. Kidney function, blood phosphorus, calcium, parathyroid hormone issues, or dialysis treatment must also be considered. You should also verify whether you have distinguished between added phosphates and actual nutritional needs without excessively reducing protein-rich foods.


Between essential intake and supplements

Essential intake and supplements are not the same. Phosphorus is an essential mineral, but most healthy adults obtain enough through their diet.
