If tingling is not a sign of effectiveness, what can be expected from beta-alanine?
If my face tingles after taking beta-alanine before a workout, does that mean it is working? Do I need to take it daily to improve my workout records? In short, tingling does not mean the effect has started.
Whether workout records improve depends on how short and intense the exercise is, and how much muscle carnosine has increased through daily repeated intake. This ingredient is not a stimulant that works immediately upon ingestion, but a component whose significance can only be discussed after accumulating over several weeks.
If tingling is not the effect, then what is it?
When taking beta-alanine alone or as part of a pre-workout product, the first thing felt is often a tingling sensation in the face, neck, back of the hands, or upper body. This is not an indicator of improved athletic performance, but a temporary paresthesia that can occur when taking approximately 800 mg or more at once. It usually lasts for 60 to 90 minutes. While this can be reduced by using smaller divided doses or sustained-release formulations, there is no point in intentionally taking a large single dose just to feel the symptoms.
Unlike alpha-amino acids that produce proteins, beta-alanine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that serves as a building block to create carnosine by combining with histidine in skeletal muscle. It must be distinguished from carnosine itself, alanine, pre-workout complexes, and the immediate stimulating effects of caffeine.
To increase muscle carnosine, repeated intake is required rather than a single dose
The goal of beta-alanine is to increase the concentration of carnosine in the muscles. Carnosine acts as a buffer when muscles become acidic. However, carnosine does not accumulate immediately just by taking it once before a workout. Most studies measured athletic performance after repeated intake over several weeks. Therefore, tingling should not be interpreted as an immediate improvement in exercise performance.
The NIH ODS also notes that while beta-alanine does increase muscle carnosine, the amount of increase varies greatly by individual and research results on athletic performance are inconsistent.
In which exercises and to what extent do the effects appear?
In a meta-analysis of 40 double-blind, placebo-controlled studies involving a total of 1,461 people, the overall effect was small. In exercises lasting approximately 0.5 to 10 minutes, athletic performance indicators moved more significantly than actual performance metrics. In other words, changes were more frequently seen in athletic performance indicators measured in a laboratory than in actual game records or strength and muscle hypertrophy.
There is a possibility of small gains in short, high-intensity efforts. However, there are almost no gains for activities exceeding 10 minutes, and effects on strength or muscle hypertrophy have not been established. Therefore, the same conclusion cannot be applied to one-rep max strength, very short sprints, or long-distance endurance.
Do not confuse a single ingredient with a pre-workout complex
When purchasing beta-alanine, the first thing to check is whether it is a single ingredient or a pre-workout mixed with caffeine, creatine, niacin, etc. The effects and adverse reactions of pre-workout complexes may be caused by other ingredients such as caffeine and niacin. These should be viewed separately from studies on beta-alanine alone.
Therefore, when choosing a product, first check if it is a single beta-alanine ingredient or a complex product, and what the single dose and total daily amount are. If it is a complex product, all ingredients, including caffeine, must be checked together.
Safety is known for short-term use, but long-term data is still lacking
In studies using 1.6 to 6.4 g/day for up to 8 weeks, no major safety issues were identified. However, data on long-term use for several months or more is insufficient. Safety data for pregnant or lactating women, children, and patients with kidney or liver disease is also lacking.
Chest pain, fainting, severe palpitations, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling should not be dismissed as simple tingling; you must seek help from 119 or an emergency room.
How to Consider Concurrent Use and Individual Circumstances
When using beta-alanine with other supplements or complex formulations, the key is what is mixed in. If it contains caffeine, it may interfere with sleep or cause palpitations, and niacin may cause skin flushing. These reactions should not be mistaken for the effects or side effects of beta-alanine alone.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, and individuals with kidney or liver disease should consult a professional before starting, as safety data is insufficient. If you experience palpitations or uncomfortable sensory abnormalities after using a complex pre-workout, you must distinguish whether it is due to beta-alanine or other ingredients.
Summary of Differences from Similarly Named Substances
Beta-alanine is different from alpha-alanine, carnosine, creatine, and caffeine. Alpha-alanine is a protein-building amino acid. Carnosine is a buffering agent within the muscles. Creatine is a component primarily related to phosphocreatine recovery. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. Beta-alanine has a different mechanism of action from these.
Furthermore, skin tingling is not the same as muscle carnosine accumulation or actual exercise performance. Exercise capacity (time-to-exhaustion) should not be viewed by the same standard as actual game records, muscle strength, or muscle hypertrophy.
The Criteria to Check Today is Not Tingling
Then what should you look for? First, check whether it is single-ingredient beta-alanine or a pre-workout mixed with caffeine, niacin, etc., and verify the amount per dose and the total daily intake. Second, see if the target exercise is high-intensity effort lasting approximately 30 seconds to 10 minutes, or if it is muscle strength, hypertrophy, very short sprints, or long-distance endurance. Third, check for pregnancy, breastfeeding, childhood, kidney or liver disease, or whether you have experienced sensory abnormalities or palpitations after using complex products.
Rather than tingling, check the total amount of single-ingredient versus complex products, whether it has been taken for several weeks, and the timeframe of the target exercise; first, look at the gap between small signals of exercise capacity and actual records.
